Automobile insurance medical payments, commonly referred to as “MedPay,” is one of the coverage benefits on all auto insurance policies in the state of Colorado. Regardless of who is at fault for the accident, MedPay will cover medical treatment and/or funeral expenses for the policyholder and other occupants of the vehicle, up to the allowed dollar amount per person.
In Colorado, insurers are required to offer $5000 in MedPay as part of your car insurance policy, and you must opt out in writing if you decide you do not want it (this is not recommended). Additionally, if you decide you want more than $5,000 in coverage, you may pay a higher premium for coverage amounts up to $100,000. It can be very worth it to have more MedPay coverage in the event you are seriously injured in an auto accident. There is no deductible to pay for treatment when your MedPay is being used, and it kicks in right away to cover immediate costs like an ambulance trip, visit to the emergency room, or urgent care. If you are injured, but not seriously enough to warrant a visit to the ER, you may also use your MedPay to receive treatment from a medical doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist. If you have been in a car accident it is important to seek treatment if you are experiencing symptoms of a concussion or have back or neck pain.
